Record five Husker researchers named NAI Senior Members | Nebraska Today
February 26, 2026. A record five University of Nebraska–Lincoln innovators have been named senior members of the National Academy of Inventors, an honor that recognizes excellence in translating research into tangible impact. Husker researchers Shubhendu Bhardwaj, Nicole Buan, Forrest Kievit, Rebecca Lai and James Schnable are among the 230 senior members selected this year — the NAI’s largest-ever class — who collectively hold more than 2,000 U.S. patents and are key players in mentoring the next generation of inventors.

March 4, 2026. Nathan Butler’s interest in plant biology and biotechnology began during his undergraduate studies when a botany book opened his eyes to the wonderful world of plants. Butler began May 1, 2025, as an assistant professor in the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture and the director of the Plant Transformation Core Research Facility. His position is 50% research, 30% service and 20% teaching and is a joint appointment with the Center for Plant Science Innovation.

Cahoon elected to the National Academy of Sciences | Nebraska Today
May 12, 2026. Edgar Cahoon, director of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Center for Plant Science Innovation, has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences, one of the nation’s highest honors for scientists and engineers. Cahoon is the sixth Husker faculty member elected to the academy. He is also the second affiliated with the Center for Plant Science Innovation. The academy announced the honor April 28 as part of its election of 120 new members and 25 international members.
