The Hyten Lab focuses on translating basic genetic and genomic discoveries in soybean into applied methods that can be used for the real-world improvement of soybean varieties. The program aims to improve agronomically important traits, such as yield, drought tolerance and response to stress, and to enhance understanding of the underlying genetic diversity that leads to yield stability in soybean cultivars. To help translate that understanding into applied breeding methods, the Hyten Lab also focuses on developing better methods, tools and genomic breeding strategies for utilizing that knowledge within soybean breeding programs. A specific area of interest is developing better methods for using next-generation sequencing to detect markers in soybean lines to better enable technologies like genomic selection for increased yields. Through this work, the research program aims to accelerate the rate of genetic gain within soybean to meet the long-term challenges of feeding the world, and to combat the negative effects of climate change on soybean production.
